The Port Townsend Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of Maestro Tigran Arakelyan, will present its April concert on Sunday, April 26 at 2 p.m. at Chimacum High School Auditorium. This is a free concert. There will also be an open dress rehearsal Friday, April 24, at 7 p.m.

This concert presents great music from a variety of Broadway musicals and movies, along with a world premiere performance by Seattle-based violinist Luke Fitzpatrick. Luke Fitzpatrick is a multi-instrumentalist, composer, and artistic director of Inverted Space, a Seattle-based new-music collective. He has played with the Seattle Philharmonic, Deltron 3030, and the E-Collective. His music has been commissioned by multiple groups, and he received Seattle’s 2023 City Artists Grant. He is known for combining modern techniques with long, singing, melodic lines. He will be debuting his new violin concerto.

Fiddler on the Roof opened in 1964 and was the longest running musical at that time. Its iconic music reshaped how culturally specific stories were told, and the Sunrise, Sunset song is still used at weddings.

Opening a year apart, Les Misérables and Phantom of the Opera redefined the Broadway mega musical. Les Mis, a quasi-opera, introduced the sung-through narrative and Phantom, running for 35 years, added a new level of visual and technical production. Both musicals introduced lush scenery, large casts, and elaborate staging. They helped redefine how long a Broadway musical could run and become a worldwide brand.

Titanic is perhaps the most popular romantic movie ever made and its music reflects that. While there is only one hit song, My Heart Will Go On, the soundtrack became the best-selling soundtrack of all time.

Chimacum High School is located at 91 W Valley Rd., Chimacum, WA. For more information about the Port Townsend Symphony Orchestra, please visit ptsymphony.org.
