Featured Artist - Jackie VanNoy
Jackie is a painter and contemporary calligrapher residing in Port Ludlow. She began her study of art at the State University College at Buffalo, NY, and continues to expand her visual vocabulary in many creative forms including painting, calligraphy, collage, and drawing. Her artwork has been exhibited in many solo and group exhibitions, and has received national and regional awards.
Jackie’s artwork has been featured in the Artist’s Magazine, the Northwest Watercolor Society’s 60th Anniversary Exhibit at the Frye Art Museum in Seattle, Prince Street Gallery in NYC, and Northwind Art Gallery in Port Townsend, WA. Jackie is represented by Women Painters of Washington Gallery in Seattle.
Jackie’s Calligraphic Musicals exhibit represents a change in the direction of her artwork, shifting her attention from what can be seen to what is heard, specifically a musical voice. She had no clear idea what that would look like, but trusted her instincts that she needed to explore the idea.
Without relying on visual imagery, Jackie chose color, music, and gesture as the prompts for her artwork. Paper and brushes were still on her tables from years of representational work in watercolor, and she added some other mark-making tools from her calligraphy studies. Jackie states, “I was clear about the voice I wanted to portray. I envisioned a singing voice with a true and joyful sound.”

This happily compelling series is an ongoing one, occasionally giving way to other abstract series along the way. She returns to the series whenever there is a rhythm, word, or tempo that awakens fresh inspiration to be explored and expressed. For access to Jackie’s portfolio, kindly visit jackievannoy.com.
