The Bayside Art Gallery is harkening the call of spring with its upcoming exhibit, Birds of a Feather, featuring paintings, sculptures, and photography by Washington artists Suzanne Burns and Emi Burns. Running from March 8 through April 30, the exhibit explores the artists’ shared connections to nature and artistic expression through diverse media. The opening reception is on Sunday, March 8, from 4 – 6 p.m. and is open to the public.
Suzanne Burns is a Port Ludlow artist working in graphite, oil paint, mixed-media, and stone. Her paintings are often paired with sculptural forms carved in marble, alabaster, and variations of soapstone, creating a dialogue between image and object, surface and mass. Suzanne’s artwork is rooted in the idea of the visual haiku, appearing light or whimsical at first encounter only to reveal layered symbolism through closer appreciation.

Emi Burns, Suzanne’s daughter-in-law, is a Seattle-based visual artist working in mixed media painting, collage, and photography. The Birds of a Feather exhibit showcases Emi’s ongoing exploration of the connection between inner and outer worlds, memory and nature, and shared human experiences. Moving between abstraction and realism, her emotionally-driven artwork draws on Japanese aesthetic principles, among other global influences, to explore transition, identity, and resonance.
