Trail Mix

by Larry Scott, Trails Chair

“Port Ludlow – A Destination Hiking Village”

Celebrate – Celebrate – Celebrate. Start your Fourth of July celebration with a short introductory hike. PLVC Trails is celebrating on the Fourth by offering to lead an official opening day hike on the last segment of the Oak Bay Trail (OBT). This will be a very short hike but with significance. The hike itself would take no more than 30 minutes. However, the significance (and celebration) will add a bit of additional time.

What (you might ask) is the big deal about this little, short section of trail. Answer: It is the last leg in our Port Ludlow Trail System that allows a hiker to travel from the furthest ends of our community in either direction without leaving one of our trails. How many other communities can say that? There will be a “Golden Spike” driven (ala the Trans Continental Railroad connection at Promontory Point in 1869), and of course, someone may be compelled to say a few words.

Participants can gather at the Beach Club’s Bridge Deck building, with the hike starting at 9 a.m. There is some elevation gain and there are a few steps to navigate on this single-track route, so be aware if you plan to join us. This segment of the OBT will also introduce the Port Ludlow Historical Cemetery recently identified and developed by Tim Rensema, with the support of the Ludlow Maintenance Commission.

What else from Trails? Mowing, mowing, and more mowing, along with weed-whacking everywhere. It’s that time of year when our cadre of trail stewards lets the committee know what needs to be done on their patch to maintain our 35 miles of designated hiking routes in our “Destination Hiking Village”.

If you want to come out for a Fun Day of camaraderie while helping to improve our community, send an email to mclgscott@cablespeed.com. “Let’s Keep Improving our Trails.”
