When we hear the ominous buzzing sound flying around us, we might react with curiosity, indifference, or a “fight or flight” response. If we recognize that the sound is coming from a bumble bee or honey bee, we will wish them well, for they are important pollinators.
What bees are native to the PNW? And what dangers do bees face? What about colony collapse? What role do wasps and hornets play in the environment? And what are Mason bees?
Join us at 6 p.m. on April 6 at the Beach Club, when Alexandra Sisk from the East Jefferson Beekeeper’s Association (EJBA) will tell us all we need to know about bees and answer your many questions. Alexandra, who goes by Sandy, is Treasurer for EJBA and is working on her Journeyman Beekeeper certification. She is in her fifth year of keeping honey bees and her first year of tending Mason bees. Sandy is also a Master Gardener intern and a retired schoolteacher. Along with her adult children, Sandy manages 15 acres of forest land near Swansonville where they grow vegetables, fruits, berries, and care for chickens and bees.
Sandy’s presentation will be held at the Beach Club, and sign-up sheets will be available at the front desk at both the Beach Club and the Bay Club by March 9. This event is open to North and South Bay members and their guests. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. Whatever dish you sign up to bring, please make it large enough to serve 8-10 people. For those who bring an appetizer, please bring one that our volunteers can easily serve. Dips do not work well. Some of us have dietary issues, so please put a note on your dish if it contains any of the following allergens: wheat, soy, eggs, milk, tree nuts, peanuts, nightshades, fish, or shellfish.
You will also need to bring your place setting (plates, napkins, eating utensils, glasses), placemats if desired, and a plastic bag for taking your dirty dishes home. We provide coffee/tea/water, but if you would prefer something else to drink, you’re welcome to bring your beverage of choice. Admission is $5 per person, payable at the door. This covers the cost of the facility, coffee/tea, banquet permit, and the honorarium we provide to the speaker. If you sign up but are unable to attend, please let us know, as no-shows can significantly affect the food selection. Questions or suggestions – call 360-437-8091. We look forward to seeing you there. Consider inviting a friend or neighbor who has never attended Dine and Discover.
