In just two short years, Chimacum School District has transformed early learning outcomes, and the results are drawing attention.
This fall, 83% of incoming kindergarten students at Chimacum Creek Primary School demonstrated readiness across all six developmental and learning domains, according to the Washington Kindergarten Inventory of Developing Skills (WaKIDS). Two years ago, just thirteen percent of Chimacum students met the same benchmark. Last year, readiness had jumped to seventy-seven percent, making this year’s results a clear continuation of an upward trend.
For families considering a move to the Chimacum School District, this progress tells an important story: focused investment, thoughtful programming, and strong community partnerships can make a real difference for young children and their long-term success. Over the past several years, the district has prioritized free preschool opportunities for three- and four-year-olds and a Transition to Kindergarten program for four-year-olds, ensuring that children arrive at school ready to learn and thrive. These programs are supported through partnerships with AAUW (American Association of University Women), East Jefferson Rotary, and Friends of Chimacum Schools, reinforcing a community-wide belief in the importance of early learning.
“Our early learning classrooms are joyful, engaging places where children feel safe taking risks and trying new things,” said Chimacum Creek Primary School Principal Sarah Walker. “This growth in readiness reflects the dedication of our staff and the value of investing early.”
Kindergarten readiness is about much more than academic skill. WaKIDS measures the whole child, including social-emotional development, physical skills, language, literacy, mathematics, and cognitive growth. Chimacum’s gains reflect a district-wide commitment to developmentally appropriate, play-based learning that builds confidence, curiosity, and a sense of belonging.
As communities across Jefferson County grow and evolve, Chimacum offers families something increasingly rare: small schools, meaningful relationships, and measurable results. The district’s dramatic improvement in kindergarten readiness underscores a simple truth: when children are supported early, families thrive.
Registration information for fall 2026 preschool and early learning programs will be available soon. Families interested in learning more are encouraged to call 360-302-5821.
In Chimacum, success doesn’t happen overnight. But with clear vision and focus, we can show steady results.
