Wildfire Awareness and Preparation Presentation

by J. Warburton – LMC Firewise Committee

Throughout Washington state, we’ve experienced low precipitation levels this past winter.  Our summers continue to be warmer and dryer, which means our area is increasingly more prone to wildfires.  In recent years, we’ve been fortunate that any nearby wildfires were controlled without injuries or property damage. However, due to these changing climatic conditions, we expect the situation to worsen this coming fire season (May – through October).

You may be asking yourself, “What can I do?”  Well, to start, awareness, education and preparedness are critical.  There are simple, practical and effective steps you can take now to reduce the risk of wildfire to your home and property.  Staying informed through local alerts and having a clear family evacuation plan could be lifesaving.

The LMC Firewise Committee in conjunction with East Jefferson Fire Rescue (EJFR) is planning an important community program to help us learn how wildfires start and spread, proactive steps to prepare your home and property against wildfires, and what to do in the event big wildfires happen.  The guest speaker for this event is Robert Wittenberg, Community Risk Manager for East Jefferson Fire Rescue.  The Washington State Department of Natural Resources (DNR) and the Jefferson County Conservation District (JCCD) will host informational tables.

This in-person presentation will be held on Tuesday, April 28, from 2 – 3:30 p.m. at the LMC Beach Club.  All our Port Ludlow community is welcome to attend.

This presentation is designed to inform and create action in our Port Ludlow community.
