Have you ever lost yourself in a good book? Have you found yourself? Have books taken you places in your imagination, given you new perspectives, and opened your mind to new dreams? With Chimacum Schools’ 2nd Annual Read-a-Thonfundraiser for outdoor education, we hope to support horizon-broadening adventure for students, both figuratively and literally!
To encourage a love of reading in our students and support them in building literacy skills, the Chimacum Community PTA is gearing up for the Read-a-Thon, taking place between February 13 and 27. Funds raised by young readers make possible field trips, outdoor education opportunities, and special school events.
During the Read-a-Thon, students will be seeking sponsors as they log the number of minutes read, challenging themselves to meet daily personal and classroom goals. The event will feature a kick-off assembly, book giveaways, and the “Read and Feed,” a special family lunch prepared by the students at Chimacum Elementary School (CES) with food grown in the school garden, organized and led by garden teacher Valerie Randall. Prizes will be awarded to individuals and classes based on the number of minutes read as well as funds raised. Anyone can sponsor a student by making a flat donation to their individual dashboard or sponsor all students by making a general donation to support the overall event.
Last year’s Read-a-Thon raised over $21,000 to invest directly into programs and experiences that would otherwise have been out of reach. Over the past year these funds have been used to support things like: field trips to local farms such as the Dharma Ridge pumpkin patch; scholarships to the beloved 6th grade CISPUS sleep away camp in Randall, WA; and the purchase of rain suits for our pre-K and transitional Kindergarten classrooms, enabling even our youngest learners to play outside, rain or shine. Special school events like Field Day, Family BBQs, and the Spelling Bee were also made possible.
If you have friends or relatives with students, reach out and ask for the link to their dashboard where you can donate and leave words of encouragement. If you love reading, believe in outdoor education, or would simply like to support students in reaching their goals, please consider donating to the Read-a-Thon directly at this link:
If you prefer to use cash or check, drop it off or mail it to Chimacum Elementary School, c/o Chimacum Community PTA, 91 W. Valley Rd., Chimacum, WA 98325. Be sure to write Read-a-Thon on the memo line. Thank you for your support!
