The May Niner’s Couples event was a Foursome Scramble, and it was well attended by Lady Niners and Niners’ men. New Couples’ Chairs Carole and Doug Fett, teamed up with members without a partner for the game. Many of the new member couples were winners in this red tee event. Golf Pro, Jim Mancill, played in one of the foursomes, a distinct advantage for that foursome. After the event, many attendees had lunch with other league members at JR’s Sand Trap Café because it was such a beautiful day. The next Couples’ event (Game: Best Two Balls of Foursome) is scheduled for June 28.
On May 14 the Niners’ four-day Captain’s Cup tournament for men and women began. This tournament will continue on the following dates: June 18, July 23, and August 20. Scores from these four dates will be compiled to determine the male and female winner of the Captain’s Cup. Niners’ Social Chairs, Diane Germain and Barb Burke, are planning a putting contest with appetizers and wine (Putt and Pour) for July 16. It will be open to all league members.
Some members of the Niners and the PLWGA are playing in WA state golf tournaments. Many members are playing in the Ladies Invitational on June 30. The Annual PLWGA Raffle will accompany this event. PL league members are encouraged to donate a basket or bottle of wine, and purchase raffle tickets. Quite a few league members attended a ‘Play Away Day” on May 11 at Wing Point Golf Course on Bainbridge Island.
In the off season, Course Superintendent Shawn Vetterick and his PLGC staff have addressed many of the course’s drainage and irrigation problems. The aerification of the course in May has vastly improved the condition of the greens.
Captain John Bockoven invites anyone interested in the Niners to play with the group Thursday mornings. Interested individuals should contact the Pro Shop desk at the Port Ludlow Golf Course (PLGC) to try out the Niners on Thursday mornings or to join the Niners. Niners’ League membership annual fee is $35, and a required GHIN Handicap annual fee is charged once the new member has played enough rounds of golf to receive a handicap. PLGC Membership is not required for participation in the PLGC golf leagues.
