Alice McDermott’s ninth novel, Absolution, begins with her protagonist preening for an afternoon garden party among the who’s who of the Americans gathered in Saigon, 1963, during the early years of the Vietnam War. McDermott, a National Book Award winner and a Pulitzer Prize finalist, explores the dynamics of America’s foray into this controversial conflict through the lens of two women a generation apart from each other. Martha’s Book Group has selected this book to commence its 2026 season. Please join us on Tuesday, January 13, 4 p.m., at the Bay Club to share your thoughts on this period and McDermott’s story telling prowess.
Martha’s Book Group meets monthly on the second Tuesday of each month at the Bay Club at 4 p.m. All are welcome to participate. For further information about the group and books to be discussed, please contact Sarah Schuch at bookgroup@plvoice.org. February’s book selection is The Dictionary of Lost Words by Pip Williams.
