Every day many of our neighbors in Jefferson County go hungry. Food insecurity is not just a missed meal, an empty stomach, or an individual experience. It is a community-wide symptom of exclusion, of not having enough – not enough nutritional food, income, or a represented voice. Hunger is a symptom of barriers to employment, education, housing, and healthcare.

Jefferson County Food Bank Association provides food resources to help our neighbors in need, serving nearly 2,700 households, comprising 6,000 people per month! The Food Bank leverages generous monetary donations to make purchases from wholesalers who offer deep discounts to food banks. The Food Bank works with network partners like Food Lifeline and NW Harvest who help facilitate food donations from large retailers, and through commodity purchases made at the State and Federal levels. It also relies on local retailers and food service businesses to donate food.

WAVE (What A Valuable Experience), an informal alliance of homeowners’ associations and faith communities, partners with the Jefferson County Food Bank Association to raise awareness of food insecurity and encourage community support throughout October. For 40 years, the WAVE Food Drive has collected tens of thousands of dollars and substantial food donations for the Food Bank.

While donations can be made at any time, the WAVE Food Drive culminates on the last day of the month. Suggested food donations are protein items such as canned meat, peanut butter, and beans. Food items and monetary donations can be dropped off Saturday, October 31, 11 a.m. – 2 p.m., at the Beach Club at 121 Marina View Drive.

Monetary donations may also be made on the Jefferson County Foodbank Association website, jcfba.org/WAVEfooddrive.
