Happy February from Jefferson County Library District (JCLD)! Whether you enjoy classic romance novels, thrilling mysteries that keep you on the edge of your seat, or heartwarming stories to cozy up with on a chilly evening, the Library District’s shelves are filled with options to satisfy every reader. Don’t miss our new program series for kids ages 4–8, beginning Tuesday, February 3. Bring your friends and enjoy a delightful afternoon of art and crafts. No sign-up is needed, just drop in and join the fun! Kids Creative Space meets on the 1st and 3rd Tuesday of each month from 3:30 p.m. – 4:30 p.m.
Do you know a teen who could use help managing stress? Invite them to join The Benji Project’s 8-week Mindful Self-Compassion for Teens series. Classes meet on Wednesdays from 2:45 p.m. to 4:45 p.m., February 4 through April 1 (no class on February 18). This program is for ages 11–14 and helps teens handle life’s ups and downs through art, games, and reflection. For tuition and registration details, visit thebenjiproject.org/after-school. On Thursday, February 5, from 4 – 5 p.m., chat live, online with author Vanessa Riley. Vanessa will share her new novel, Fire Sword and Sea. Set in the Caribbean in 1675, the story follows Jacquotte Delahaye, the mixed-race daughter of a tavern owner on Tortuga who dreams of life at sea. Disguised as a man, she sails as a pirate for years – until her crew turns to the slave trade, forcing her to choose a new path. Dr. Lindsay Stewart explores 400 years of Black women’s magic and traditions in her new book, The Conjuring of America. Dr. Stewart, an award-winning author and Professor of Philosophy, reveals how Black women used knowledge, creativity, and resilience to preserve culture, inspire hope, and push for freedom. Don’t miss our monthly presentation on Disaster and Emergency Preparedness hosted by Jefferson County’s Department of Emergency Management (DEM). This month’s workshop will take place on Thursday, February 19, from 10:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. We will discuss the types of disasters that can affect Jefferson County and explore the best ways to prepare for them.
