We’ve talked about this topic before, but it remains one of the most misunderstood and important factors in producing a successful tee shot. Finding the fairway helps set the tone and takes a lot of pressure off the next shot.

So, how high should I tee it? Always a topic for discussion and one of the most asked questions when working with a student. Although there is no perfect answer, understanding the effects of tee height is important. As a general rule, teeing the ball so one half is above the top of the driver, and one half of the ball is below the top (center golf ball pictured) would be considered a standard height.
On a hole where the wind is at our back, to gain extra distance, and promote a higher launch, tee the ball higher (front golf ball pictured) which will lead to greater carry distance.
In some cases, such as high wind, it may be necessary to reduce spin and launch the tee shot lower. In this instance, teeing the ball so the top of the ball is level with the top of the driver (left golf ball pictured) should do the trick. This is also a way to take advantage of firm conditions as it allows for greater roll.
As with most things in golf, there is always a “trial and error” period that will also include adjusting the ball position in your stance. Get out there and find that perfect height for you and remember…it’s a game, so have fun! See you on the trails!
