As you drive around this beautiful place we call home, have you ever thought about the first people who traversed this area and what their lives were like? Who they were, how they lived, what creatures they encountered, what foods they ate? Often, I sit gazing out my window on misty mornings somehow hoping I might see an ancient canoe come out of the mist. It is not to be. However, the South Bay Community Association, through its Activities Committee, is sponsoring a series of presentations that might help open our eyes to the beginning of people on the Olympic Peninsula – the First Nations.
Mr. David Brownell, the Executive Director of the North Olympic History Center, has already given three presentations about First Nations’ people to audiences at the South Bay Community Association. Each presentation has been received with comments such as, “I didn’t know that” and “what great information” being common refrains. Starting in January and running through June, Mr. Brownell will continue these presentations, each one a stand-alone version and you are invited!
· All presentations are free of charge. There is a donation jar, and you are encouraged to fill it up as all money goes to the non-profit North Olympic History Center
· All presentations are at the South Bay Community Association, 120 Spinnaker Place, Port Ludlow. The presentations begin at 1 p.m. and last about an hour. Mr. Brownell does a question/answer session at the end of each presentation.
Dates / topics for the next two presentations are:
· Thursday, January 15 - S’Klallam History of Port Townsend and the qatáy village
· Thursday, February 12 - Old Patsey’s Potlach of July 4, 1891
Dates and topics for the March – June presentations to be announced later.
SBCA is pleased to offer this series of programs as part of our on-going education/ information outreach. We have also teamed with Jefferson Healthcare for a series of health-related programs, and we are planning several “one off” programs on a variety of topics. Everyone from our Port Ludlow community is invited to these programs unless otherwise specified. Information on dates, subject, and times for all our programs will be placed in the Voice magazine or, for SBCA members, sent by eblast.
Many of us are retired, but our brains still need fuel. Come and join in the fun of learning.
